Strawberries Still Life
Still life oil painting of strawberries, oil on board, 6 x 6 inches.
I thought I would have a go at creating my own surface to paint on. You can paint on all sorts of surfaces from canvas to copper as long as its well primed to take the paint.
In this case I have used a 6 x 6 inch square of cardboard and used multiple coats of acrylic primer to seal it.
I put the primer on with a thick bristled brush that leaves the brush strokes visible and gives it a slight tooth to hold the paint better.
However it does take some getting used to and there is a still a smooth feel to it. The paint tends to slide and stay on the brush more so than with canvas.
I also had to apply a couple of coats in places to build up the required opacity.
Interesting experiment, but personally I prefer the extra grip you get with canvas.
